FL-3 Solo Pilot

This intermediate program focuses primarily on the take off and landing phases of flight in preparation for your First Solo!  You will become quite familiar with the Emergency Procedures of the aircraft in addition to learning some basic Instrument Flying skills.  Pilot Decision Making skills are emphasized throughout this module as you prepare to be the only one in the cockpit!

What makes this program unique?

This Flight Level culminates at one of the most memorable flying experiences of your life, your First Solo Flight!  When you reach this level, although not fully licenced yet, you can truly say you are a pilot, as it is just you up there making the decisions and flying the plane.

What you learn:

  • How to recognize illusions of drifting created by the wind
  • How to control the aircraft on the runway with rudder inputs
  • How to interpret the windsock and weather information to pick a suitable direction for takeoff
  • How to make appropriate radio calls and interpret radio calls of incoming aircraft
  • How to maneuver the aircraft in a sideslip, forward slip and slipping turn
  • How to take off and land in a crosswind condition
  • How to effectively fly a circuit pattern around an active runway
  • How to judge height above ground when close to the runway
  • How to apply an overshoot procedure when aborting a landing
  • How to deal with emergencies such as engine fires, electrical fires and engine failures
  • How to glide the aircraft from the downwind leg to the runway without engine power
  • How to use the instruments as a sole means of flying the airplane
  • How to recover from bad landings including high flares, bounces and porpoiseing
  • How to abort a takeoff

At the end of this program you will have flown an aircraft all by yourself with no instructor beside you.  You will be able to take off and land all on your own.  You will have advanced greatly in your pilot decision making skills and you will start to gain even more confidence in your abilities in the aircraft.  You will have a basic knowledge of how to fly the airplane by sole reference to instruments so that in the event you inadvertently enter cloud, you will be able to execute a 180 degree turn in the opposite direction and fly out of it.

Time Commitment

This program requires approximately 30 hours of your time, of which approximately 13 hours are actual flying time with an instructor (Dual), about 30 minutes is actual flying by yourself (Solo), 1hour is spent in the Flight Simulator, 6 hours are spent with an instructor in ground briefings and the remainder is spent studying course manuals that will familiarize you with the information pertinent to the lessons. If you fly twice a week, the program will take approximately 7 weeks to complete.  Faster or slower is your choice, we will make a schedule around you!

Average Financial Impact

The costs are on a “pay as you go” basis, meaning at the end of each flight session you only need to pay for that days’ flight and ground time.  Based on the Flying Time and Instructor time quoted above, this program can be completed at an average cost of $3800 including HST.  You could expect to spend $300 for a given lesson module.

With this training you will be able to:

  • Control the aircraft by only referencing the cockpit instruments
  • Take off, fly a circuit pattern and Land the aircraft all by yourself
  • Recover from bad landings or abort them pre-emptively
  • Glide the aircraft to the runway in the event of an engine failure in the circuit
  • Handle emergencies within the cockpit such as electrical or engine fires

Enrolment

Due to the one-on-one in-flight training, enrolment in this program is limited and should be booked as soon as possible.

* Completion of Flight Level 2 is a Pre-requisite to this program.
